Michelle Cavanagh

Michelle Cavanagh arrived in Australia in 1966 as a ‘ten-pound-Pom’. A long-time feminist and a retired businesswoman, she is the mother of six children. She has maintained a life-long love of literature and the theatre later developing an interest in Australian history while studying for a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney’s Macquarie University. It was during this time that she discovered the story of Margaret Holmes. Michelle has personal experience of the ramification of Australian involvement in the Vietnam War as her husband was among the first conscripts sent there in 1966. This increased her desire to tell Margaret’s life story. After five years’ research and many interviews, she has written a definitive biography of one of Australia’s unsung heroes. Michelle lives in Sydney with her husband. Margaret Holmes: The life and times of an Australian peace campaigner (New Holland, 2006) is her first book.
